What’s covered in a firearms safety course?

Shooter’s Delight offers a firearms safety course for categories A & B (Rifles & Shotguns), category H (Handguns), categories C & D (Semi Auto Rifles and Pump Action Shotguns), and category M (Crossbows). Anyone who wants to apply for a guns or firearms licence in Brisbane, must have completed a safety course in the previous 12 months for the type of weapon they wish to purchase.

Your firearms safety course must also be undertaken at a registered training organisation that offers the Queensland Police Course in Firearms Safety Course (10618NAT). Completion of the required course is compulsory if you wish to hold a valid firearms licence.

Topics included in the firearms safety course

The safety course takes up an entire day with the morning usually scheduled for covering the key points of the Queensland Weapons Act. All licenced gun holders need to be aware of the laws regarding guns and weapons in Queensland and of their responsibilities.

You will also learn the basic differences between the various categories of firearms and be given a broad understanding of their operation. Range procedures, safety rules for guns and hunting ethics will also be covered in the morning session.

The afternoon session of your firearms safety course covers the basics of firearm maintenance, as well as accurate and safe shooting practices. You will also have a practical firing session during the afternoon and you will have to complete and pass two multiple choice examinations at some point during the day.

Courses are held at the Belmont Shooting Complex with sign on commencing at 8am and instruction at 8.30am (completion is between 3.30pm and 4.00pm). You will need to bring along photo ID, and the cost for categories A or B is $95. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing (a hat and closed footwear are essential), tea and coffee will be available during the day, but you need to bring along your own lunch.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) exempts you from the practical shooting session only, and you need to supply evidence of your experience on the day. A discount of $10 is given for RPL.
