The earmuffs amplify ambient sound to a safe 82 dB, which can help you hear soft sounds in a quiet environment, such as walking in the forest. Then patented response technology reverts to passive hearing protector when noise reaches 82 dB. Rated hearing protection is 22db. This feature also allows wearers to hear important communications, including other shooters and environmental sounds.
The directionally placed stereo microphones amplify and enhance sound for more natural hearing vs. cheaper single mic alternatives. The springy steel headband withstands rough treatment in the toughest workplaces, while remaining quite comfortable for most users.
The electronics feature an AUX input (1/8 inch / 3.5mm) connection that allows connection to external MP3 players, phones, some walkie-talkies or other audio devices. It should be noted that these are not intended as a high-fidelity pair of headphones, and that the volume limiting circuit keeps overall volume at or below 82db no matter how loud you turn it up.

Although the product is advertised to suppress noise exceeding an 82db threshold, noise generated by air compressors, lawn mowers, power saws, etc. may NOT be effectively suppressed. They do work effectively with impact noise, e.g. hammers, presses, and firearms. If you plan to use them on a lawn mower while listening to your ipod or iphone, this may not be the right hearing protector for you.
The Howard Leight R-01526 is the perfect fit for a low-budget, high-quality noise reduction solution for earmuffs. It has a nice compact foldable design to keep in your shooting gear bag. The electronics will shut off after 4 hours, so if you forget to turn it off after you are done using it, it saves the battery life. In case the batteries do expire, the batteries (2 AAA cells) are easily installed/replaced. The ON/OFF and volume control switch are easily reached with one hand so adjustment is just as easy. There is a 1/8 inch 3.5 mm jack port for your MP3 player of choice so you can listen to digital recordings while still protecting your ears as well as hearing someone speaking in a normal conversation level around you in a noisy environment. It is easily adjustable for a comfortable fit and the noise reduction rating of 22 dBA makes it more than a match for even some other higher dollar models.
On a related note, many customers have need for respirator protection as well at indoor shooting ranges. Depending on the ventilation, many shooters report elevated levels of lead in their bloodstream, which is an obvious health hazard.
